Parking in Oadby
Oadby is one of the easier places we work for a home charger. It's a leafy, established suburb of larger houses on generous plots, and nearly everyone has somewhere off the road to park. Here's how the streets break down.
The inter-war and post-war homes
Most of Oadby is big detached and semi houses from the 1920s to the 1960s, sitting on wide plots with their own drive and often a garage too. There's plenty of room to park off the road and a sensible place to put the charger, so on these homes the install is nearly always straightforward.
The tree-lined roads
Oadby's mature, tree-lined roads are part of what makes it so pleasant, and they make no difference to the charger. The only time the trees matter is if you also want solar to feed the car, since a heavy canopy over the roof cuts what the panels make. Worth a look on the same visit if that's on your mind.
The older streets near the centre
A few of the tighter, older streets closer to Oadby centre have less room to park off the road. A home charger needs somewhere off-street to sit, so on these we look first at where and how you park before we say what's possible.
The Oadby catch: the grant usually isn't available
The one thing that trips people up in Oadby isn't the install, it's the grant. Because most homes here are owner-occupied with their own driveway, most Oadby homeowners fall outside who the chargepoint grant now covers.
It's worth being straight about this before you get your hopes up. The grant still helps renters, and flat owners with an off-street bay, and there's a route for homes that charge from the street. If that's your situation in Oadby you may well be eligible, and we'll say so. If you own a house with a drive, which most of Oadby does, you almost certainly won't be. Either way we'll tell you where you stand, and the full rule is on our page on what a home charger costs to fit.
The good news is the install itself is simple on most Oadby homes, and any competent electrician's day rate is a known quantity. If you want the detail on who's allowed to fit one and which plug your car needs, those pages cover it.
Why a home charger is worth it in Oadby
With a drive at nearly every Oadby house, charging at home is the easy win. Here's why it beats topping up in town, and where else nearby we fit chargers.
A 7kW charger fills most cars overnight. On a cheap night-time tariff you charge while you sleep for a fraction of what public chargers cost, which on the wide Oadby drives is far easier than sitting at a rapid point off the A6. If there are two cars on the drive they can take turns on the same schedule. Add a home battery and you get even more say over when you buy power.
We fit chargers right across the borough. Neighbouring Wigston is next door, and Great Glen is a short run down the A6. Our main EV charger installation page has the full detail, and our areas we cover page shows everywhere we work.
Common questions
- We own our Oadby house and park on the drive. Can we get the chargepoint grant?
- In all likelihood no, and it's fairer to say so up front. Most of Oadby is owner-occupied houses with their own driveway, and that's exactly the group the grant no longer reaches. If you rent, or you own a flat with an off-street bay, you may still be eligible. Come and tell us how you park, and we'll be straight about where you stand before you commit.
- Our road in Oadby is lined with big trees. Does that affect a home charger?
- Not the charger itself. The unit and the cable don't care about shade, so a tree-lined road makes no difference to fitting one. Shade only matters if you're also thinking about solar to help feed the car, since a canopy over the roof cuts what the panels make. We can look at both on the same visit.
- We're on one of the older streets near the centre with no driveway. What are our options?
- A few of the tighter streets closer to Oadby centre have little or no room to park off the road, and a home charger needs somewhere off-street to sit. If that's you, and you rent or the parking is on the street, there's an on-street route that can also open up the grant. Come and tell us how you park and we'll be straight about whether a home charger works for your spot.
