Are solar panels worth it in the UK?

For a lot of UK homes, yes, but it genuinely depends on your roof, how you use power and your tariff, and anyone who promises a fixed payback before seeing your roof is guessing. The honest way to judge it is on your own numbers, not a brochure average.

The single biggest factor is how much of your electricity you use during daylight. Solar saves you most when you use the power as you generate it, because that is electricity you are not buying from the grid. Anything you do not use is exported, which is worth far less than what you save by using it yourself. So a home with someone in during the day, or with a battery to shift daytime generation into the evening, gets more out of solar than a house that sits empty until 6pm.

Your roof matters next. A south-facing roof is ideal, east and west work well, and north-facing slopes rarely justify it on their own. Shading from a chimney, tree or neighbouring roof can quietly cost you more than orientation does. A roof that ticks these boxes tips the maths firmly towards worthwhile; a shaded north slope can tip it the other way.

On the money, there are two honest points worth making. Residential solar currently carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, which takes a real amount off the upfront cost. And the panels keep generating for decades, so the system pays for itself over years rather than overnight, the exact payback depending entirely on your usage and what you would otherwise pay for power. We would rather show you that calculation for your home than quote you someone else's.

A battery often improves the case for an evening-heavy household, but it is not automatic, plenty of homes do well on panels alone. That is part of what an assessment works out.

Where solar is not worth it, we will say so. If your roof is wrong, your usage does not fit, or a smaller system makes more sense, that is the advice you will get, because the point of the business is the right system for your home, not the biggest one for a salesman's commission.
