How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
A typical home solar system costs somewhere in the region of £6,000 to £8,000 installed, with the Energy Saving Trust putting a standard 3.5 kWp system (the usual fit for a three-bed house) at around £6,100. Add a battery and most homes are looking more like £10,000 to £14,000. The honest answer for your home, though, only comes from looking at your roof.
Size is the biggest lever. Smaller systems sit below that range and larger arrays above it, so across the UK you will see installed prices anywhere from roughly £4,000 to £10,000 for panels alone, depending on how many you fit. A three-bedroom home on a 3.5 to 4 kWp system is the common middle of that, which is where the £6,000 to £8,000 figure comes from.
Beyond size, the things that move the price are the panels and inverter you choose, whether you add a battery, how easy your roof is to work on (scaffolding, height, an awkward layout), and any electrical work your home needs to take the system safely. Two houses on the same street can land at different numbers for exactly these reasons, which is why a single "from" price online tends to mislead.
One saving applies to everyone: residential solar currently carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, so the prices above are what you pay rather than a figure with tax stacked on top. A battery added at the same time as the panels generally falls under the same zero rate.
