How much does it cost to install a home EV charger?
A straightforward home EV charger installation typically costs around £800 to £1,200, including the charger unit itself and the fitting. What pushes it above that is almost always the work around the charger rather than the charger itself, so the real figure depends on your home.
For a standard job, where the charger goes on an outside wall reasonably close to your fuse board and the supply can take it, most homes land in that £800 to £1,200 range for a decent unit fitted properly. A higher-spec or smart charger sits at the top of it.
The cost climbs when there is extra work to do: a long cable run from the board to where the car parks, an older consumer unit that needs upgrading to take the new circuit safely, a service or earthing arrangement that needs attention, or groundworks to reach a detached drive. None of that is unusual in older Leicester housing, and it is exactly the sort of thing we flag up front rather than spring on you mid-job.
On grants, the picture is narrower than it used to be. The government's EV chargepoint grant gives up to £500 towards a charger, but it is now aimed at renters and flat owners with private off-street parking (and households using an on-street cross-pavement solution), and it runs until 31 March 2027. Homeowners with their own driveway are no longer eligible, so for most houses the price above is the price.
