How Ashby splits
Whether a charger here is a quick job or a bigger one comes down to one thing: how you park, and how far the cable has to run to your fuse board. Ashby falls into three sorts of home.
The edge estates
The newer estates round the edge of town are the simplest. You park right by the house, so the run back to the fuse board is short and the charger goes on the wall by the car. For most people out here it's a plain job.
Interwar homes
The 1930s and post-war homes ringing the centre nearly all have a driveway or a garage, so there's somewhere to put the charger. The one thing worth watching is an older fuse board, which we'd check when we come and look.
Town-centre streets
The Georgian townhouses on Market Street and Bath Street front straight onto the pavement, with no driveway. Here the question is whether you can park on your own land at all, and reach it with a cable. Where people park on the street, a channel set into the pavement is the usual route.
We come and look first
The cable run is different at every Ashby address, and the town centre and the estates are worlds apart. So the only honest way to price it is to come and look. That's the free assessment.
We come out, look at where you park and where the charger would sit, and measure the run back to your fuse board. We check the board can take it and ask when you tend to drive, and whether more is coming, maybe another EV or a heat pump, so the job still suits you a few years on. On a listed or conservation-area front we find the least visible spot for the box. You get one written price, and that's what you pay.
A home charger is proper electrical work that has to be installed and certified by a qualified electrician. Nearly every car takes a Type 2 charger, so that's what we fit once we've checked yours. - Our townhouse in the centre has no driveway. Can you still fit a charger?
- Often, yes. The Georgian townhouses along Market Street and Bath Street front straight onto the pavement, with nowhere to park off the road. So the first thing to sort isn't the wiring, it's whether you can park on your own land at all and get a cable to it. Where you park on the street instead, a cable channel set into the pavement is the usual route. This is the kind of address we'd rather see in person, and we'll tell you straight what will work before you commit.
- It's a listed house near the centre. Does the charger need permission?
- It can do, so it's worth checking first. Ashby's old core, around Castle Street and the Market Street and Bath Street frontages, sits in a conservation area, and some of those houses are listed. A charger is a box fixed to an outside wall, and on a listed front that kind of work can need listed-building consent. None of that stops you having one. It usually just means putting the box on a side or rear wall, out of view from the street. We check what applies to your address before any work starts.
- We rent a flat in the town centre. Is there a grant to help?
- Possibly, and this is one of the few Ashby situations where it fits. Most homes on the estates are owned houses with their own drive, and the chargepoint grant doesn't cover those any more. But it is aimed at renters and flat owners, so a flat in the centre using an on-street cable channel is exactly the sort of case it's meant for.
