Where you live in Loughborough decides the job
Loughborough splits fairly cleanly into two kinds of home for charging, and which one you're in matters more than anything else about the car or the charger.
Estates with a drive
The estates ringing the town, from Shelthorpe and Thorpe Acre to the closes out towards Garendon and Nanpantan, mostly come with their own drive and a fuse board close by. That's the easy case: the charger goes on the wall next to where the car already sits. Because you own the drive, the grant generally isn't open to you, but the install is the simple sort.
Terraces near the centre and university
Closer in, around Storer Road, Ashby Road and the streets feeding the university, it's Victorian terraces with no drive, and a lot of them are student lets. Parking is on the street, so the charger has to reach a car at the kerb through a cross-pavement channel. That's the setup the grant is actually built for, and if you let the house there's the landlord question too.

What it actually costs turns on the cable run and the state of your fuse board far more than the unit itself, so it's worth reading what a home charger costs, what moves the price, and where the grant does and doesn't apply before you budget. The free assessment
We come out, see where the car parks and where the charger would go, check the run back to the fuse board, and look at the board and the earthing. We also think a few years ahead, whether another EV or a heat pump might follow and whether the board can carry it, so the job still fits you later. Then you get one written figure. That's the price you pay.
The landlord question
Around the university a lot of homes are let. There the person paying for the charger isn't the one who saves on charging, and the grant favours the tenant's kind of setup, not the owner's. - I'm near the university and park on the street. Can I still have a home charger?
- Often, yes. Around Storer Road and Ashby Road it's mostly terraces with no drive, so the car sits on the street. A home charger has to reach a car on your own side, so where there's no drive we usually run the cable out to the kerb through a channel across the pavement. That on-street setup is the one the grant is built for. If there's genuinely no safe way to reach your car, we'll say so rather than sell you a charger you can't use.
- I let a house to students near the university. Is a charger worth fitting?
- It's worth thinking through first. In a let, you pay for the charger, but the tenant paying the electric bill gets the cheaper charging, so the cost and the benefit land in different hands. That catches out a lot of landlords round Loughborough. The plus side is that a rented home that parks on the street is the kind that can claim the grant, where an owner with a drive can't.
