Are there grants for solar panels in the UK?

For most homeowners, no, there is no universal grant and no genuine "free solar panels" scheme. The real help is either means-tested support for low-income households, or the 0% VAT that everyone already gets. If an advert promises free panels with no catch, it pays to read the small print.

The main government-backed support is ECO4, the Energy Company Obligation. It is not a grant you apply for so much as an obligation on energy suppliers to improve the least efficient homes, and it runs until the end of December 2026. It is tightly means-tested: it targets households on certain benefits or low incomes, in properties with a poor energy rating (EPC band D to G). Most working homeowners in a reasonably efficient home will not qualify.

So where do the "free solar" adverts come from? Usually one of two places. Some are ECO4 installs dressed up as a giveaway, which only the eligible minority can actually access. Others are "rent a roof" or finance arrangements, where a company puts panels on your roof and keeps the benefit, or you pay over time, neither of which is free in the way the headline suggests. There is nothing wrong with finance, but it is not a grant, and it is worth knowing which one you are being offered.

The saving that genuinely is open to everyone is tax: residential solar carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, which takes a real chunk off the installed price without any application or eligibility test.
